Most medical conditions don’t prevent someone from having a safe abortion. When you call to schedule, our team will ask you a few questions about your health so we can make sure you get care in the safest place for you, whether that’s in our clinic or in a hospital where extra support is available.
Our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible throughout the process. During your procedure, we use both numbing medicine and moderate sedation (medications that help you relax and reduce pain). This combination allows most people to feel calm and experience much less discomfort than they might expect.
It’s important to know that moderate sedation is not the same as being fully asleep under general anesthesia—we don’t use general anesthesia in our clinic. That means you will still notice some cramping, pressure, or brief moments of discomfort. For many patients, these sensations are manageable and often similar to strong period cramps. Our care team will be with you the entire time, checking in on how you’re feeling and adjusting as needed. Your safety and comfort are our top priorities.
After the abortion, mild cramping is common. We recommend patients take ibuprofen (motrin) and acetaminophen (tylenol), which generally works very well. By the day after the procedure, the majority of patients are feeling very well and have minimal discomfort.
Yes. we offer private cremation, hand prints, foot prints, and photos (when possible).
After an uncomplicated first trimester abortion, we don’t recommend any activity restrictions.
After a later abortion, some experts recommend avoiding intense exercise and avoiding heavy lifting (greater than 20 pounds) for 2 weeks. However, there are no guidelines and no evidence saying that this is necessary, and the most important thing is for patients to monitor for signs of complications (e.g., heavy bleeding, fever, severe pain, abnormal discharge) and to seek prompt medical attention if these occur.
Every person is different regarding when they will feel ready -- physically and emotionally -- to have sex after their abortion. Here are a couple things to consider:
Yes. Having an abortion does not affect your ability to have children in the future. The most reliable scientific research has never shown a link between an uncomplicated abortion and infertility. The only situations where fertility could be affected are extremely rare medical emergencies—such as very heavy bleeding that cannot be controlled. These kinds of emergencies are very uncommon, and our medical team is trained to handle any bleeding problems if they arise with less invasive treatments. For nearly everyone, having an abortion does not change your chances of becoming pregnant later when you want to.
